The Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the University of New Mexico. The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for all aspects of the academic mission, including research, instruction, and academic personnel. The current provost, Chaouki Abdallah, became the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs in July 2011, a position he held until December 2016. He was appointed acting president by The UNM Board of Regents in January 2017 and interim president on June 1, 2017. Upon the appointment of president Stokes he returned to his position as the provost and executive vice president of academic affairs on March 1, 2018.
