Teaching and Learning
UNM is committed to creating an equitable environment for learning—one that provides all students with the opportunity to succeed with right effort and the right support. Staff contribute to this effort by offering, among many supports, students wellness services, tutoring, advisement, on- and off-campus opportunities, outcomes data, evaluation and research, infrastructure, and just-in-time support. Instructors at UNM can help build this environment by honing their teaching craft across at least three of the seven areas below. Disciplinary expertise and potential are conditions for instructor hire at UNM. A demonstrated effort to make learning possible and accessible for all students provides evidence of teaching quality. Instructors can demonstrate that effort through engagement, innovation, and application of evidence-based techniques to their work with students.
Best Practices and Improvements in the Classroom
UNM is committed to providing an equitable environment for teaching. UNM has high aspirations: effective and inspiring teaching at a Research I university that serves one of the most diverse populations in the country. That means offering instructors high quality information about pedagogical approaches, professional development opportunities, peer collaborations, and staff support and infrastructure.
Academic Affairs has set a UNM 2040 target of enabling Unit 1 and 2 instructors to complete programs or training in at least three of the seven areas below. Specific programming is also available for Graduate Teaching Assistants. Completion of programs and training constitutes valuable evidence in support of job candidacy and promotion.

International Opportunities
Study Abroad for Faculty
The University of New Mexico is committed to providing short-term international study opportunities for students. Each year, UNM departments sponsor summer or intersession international courses, field trips as part of semester courses, and a variety of other programs to give students international experience and exposure to other cultures. These programs can be among the most important educational and personal experiences UNM can provide for students, and we appreciate the commitment of faculty and staff members who put in the extra time and energy it takes to plan and direct these programs.
Study Abroad for Students
GEO is responsible for international recruitment and admissions, creates opportunities to study and work overseas through exchange and education abroad programs, offers immigration, orientation, and co-curricular advising services for international students and scholars who study and work at UNM, provides intensive English language programs at the intermediate to advanced level, and develops short-term certificate programs for adult learners.
Globally Engaged Awards
The Globally Engaged Research Award is offered by the Global Education Office (GEO) and the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) at The University of New Mexico (UNM) to highlight the dynamic international research conducted by UNM faculty and students. Advising is a dynamic partnership between students and advisors with each fully participating in the advising experience.
The purpose of the Office of Advising Strategies (OAS) is to educate, lead, and advocate for advisement. We provide advisors with training, professional development, and resources needed to best serve students. OAS is also the administrative center for dual credit and concurrent enrollment, and the Provost's Committee for Advising (PCA). We regularly issue reports and assessments of the advising experience on behalf of all advising units.
Assessment
Program Assessment yields insights enabling faculty and staff to improve student learning and learning environments, enhance student experience and opportunities, and develop and execute collective goals. It also provides evidence of program and institutional effectiveness. The UNM Office of Assessment and Academic Program Review (OAAPR) supports the process of continuous improvement through assessment with: information, workshops, consultations, and resources; report support and collection; evaluation of assessment processes and outcomes; and institutional reporting on assessment. Program assessment is a fundamental research tool to strengthen teaching and learning and a required University and accreditation practice with a three-year cycle for all degree programs. OOAPR provides extensive resources and support on assessment and brings stakeholders together in monthly Provost’s Committee on Assessment (PCA) meetings.
