Remembering our community in this season of gratitude

October 29, 2025

Dear Lobo Community,

The ongoing U.S. government shutdown is creating challenges across the country, including here at The University of New Mexico. One significant impact is on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps many New Mexicans – and Lobos – meet basic needs.

According to the USDA, if no budget agreement is reached, SNAP benefits will stop being issued beginning Nov. 1. This means millions of families and children could soon face food insecurity. Here at UNM, this reality is close to home: 4.5% of UNM students who completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form reported receiving SNAP benefits.

Querencia at UNM reminds us that our campus is a place of belonging, care, and mutual support. As the weather turns colder and the holiday season draws near, I encourage you to consider how you can help fellow Lobos through our Lobo Food Pantry – whether by donating food, toiletries, or funds, or by volunteering your time.  To donate or volunteer, contact LoboRESPECT at (505) 277-2911 or loborespect@unm.edu. Monetary donations can also be made through the UNM Foundation.

While we hope for a resolution soon, the need for support will remain. Your generosity reflects the heart of our community, where each of us defines all of us. Thank you for helping ensure that every Lobo feels the strength of our Querencia during this challenging time.

With much gratitude,

Barbara Rodriguez
Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
